Mrs. Rosa Marian Johnson Newberry, 73 passed away at 5:55 p.m. on November 8, 2020, holding her daughter Regina Robert hand in Port Orange, Florida.
She was born on March 1, 1947 in Hawkinsville, Georgia. She was the daughter of Mr. Frederick Douglass and Annie Lee Newberry.
Marian, a woman of keen foresight and courage managed the affairs of the Wimberly Plantation. Her early education was in Elko and Perry Georgia where she lived on a farm with her mom, Annie Lee, Dad, Fred Newberry and siblings. She was baptized in a small creek behind the church in 1958. As she grew older, she joined millions of African Americans heading north for the promise of higher wages and a better education.
She worked in the home of a Jewish family in Long Island after which she was employed by Thriving Drycleaners in Queens, New York, and a Labor Union in New York City. She became a business owner and opened her own Day Care Center, Play and Learn” where she educated countless children. She later received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Human Development.
Survivors include children Regina (Archie) Roberts, Julius (Ameenah Saleem) Johnson, Angel (Tom) Telesca, Roberta and Joseph Johnson. A God Daughter, Garland Wright. Sisters and brothers: Fred. Rose, Troy, Evelyn, Leroy (Duck), Charles, Wendy, Ernest, and Rick. Grandchildren: Muhammed, Stefani, Shaleema, Jordan, Jayden, Gabriella, Mariah, Abel and Jeremiah. Sisters-in-Law, Dean and Earline. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
